The panoramas from Hilltop View 4 are hard to beat. From all eight bedrooms, as well as the lounges, dining rooms, bars and pool deck, stunning views over Bang Rak, Plai Laem and the bays of Choeng Mon unfold. Guests also enjoy prime views of the island’s most dramatic and impressive temples – Wat Plai Laem and Big Buddha – as they glisten in the sun. And what’s more, the villa’s hilltop position presents spectacular sunrise (if you can force yourself out of your comfortable bed) and sunset vistas.
Sun loungers set up in a shallow section of the triangular infinity pool will keep you cool while you soak up the tropical sun. But should you prefer shade, the bar areas are ideal spots to chill with a book or enjoy a sundowner. At night, the pool and outdoor bar come to life with colour-changing lights, and the party atmosphere doesn’t stop here: the whole villa lends itself to fun and festivity, with a pool table, TVs everywhere, a state-of-the-art central music system, and three built-in bars. Techies will love Hilltop View 4 too, as an iPad controls not only the lighting and music, but also movies in the cinema with its 12 reclining seats. There’s even a designated ‘teen pad’ on the bottom level of the villa, with three brightly painted bedrooms, plus lounge, dining and TV areas. This floor also has its own entrance so night owls won’t disturb sleepers when they sneak home late.
And talking of sleep … as much as it’s a party-pad, Hilltop View 4 is also a peaceful haven. The eight bedrooms all make remarkably serene escapes, with huge bathrooms, unique artwork and furnishings, phenomenal views, flop-in comfortable beds, satellite channel TVs and DVD players and, in many cases, cosy window seats and private patios or balconies.
With so much to keep you entertained at the villa, you may not want to venture out, but if you do, the restaurants and beautiful beaches of Choeng Mon are just down the hill (the Samui Summit estate offers a competitively priced transfer service to Choeng Mon and elsewhere on the island), while in-villa services, including massages and a private chef, can be arranged by your villa manager with ease.
Hilltop View 4 is located near the top of the Samui Summit Estate, commanding spectacular views, and with uncompromised privacy. To the right and below the villa is natural vegetation, and to the left lies a near-completed villa (well beyond the noisy construction stage when we visited in September 2013). Although Choeng Mon village is only about 500m away, it’s down a relatively steep hill, so you may prefer to organise a car or use the estate’s transfer service (extra charge) – at least on the way back. The village is quaint, with a good variety of upmarket restaurants and cafés, while the beach at Choeng Mon is one of the best on the island, and is particularly good for children.
This massive villa, sprawls over a rather daunting four and a half floors, but once you start exploring you’ll find that sleeping and living areas are sensibly segregated and you’ll no doubt enjoy the opportunity to admire the many artefacts and unusual furniture pieces that you discover along the way. For the stair-shy, there’s also a lift that conveniently connects each level.
A water feature welcomes you into the villa’s impressive double volume main living room, and from here, one entertainment area flows into the next over two levels. A second lounge, richly furnished in reds, opens to the pool and is an ideal reading room, while the fully equipped kitchen services two dining areas on this floor: one indoors and one alfresco. A few stairs down from the living room is the pool and terrace, an outdoor bar and a relaxation or massage sala. If you fancy a little bar-hopping, a second bar – complete with pool table – lies indoors just off the terrace, and yet another is set up on the rooftop terrace. You certainly won’t go thirsty at Hilltop View 4! The entertainment facilities here rival that of any private club, making it the perfect party pad.
One floor down are five bedrooms (four kings and a twin), a Moroccan-inspired chill area furnished with giant beanbags, and the home cinema. These bedrooms are all generously proportioned, and boast great views from the pillow as well as from private patios and balconies. The master suite interconnects with the twin room to make an ideal family suite, and has a huge bathroom offering spectacular views from its tub. The second king-bedded room boasts a corner bath in its ensuite, while all the others are shower only.
Tucked away at ground level is the ‘teenage pad’ – suitable, in fact, for guests of all ages – with three equally proportioned ensuite bedrooms (two kings and a twin). These rooms are distinguished from each other by individual turquoise, orange and yellow colour schemes, and share several communal spaces including a TV corner and dining area, making this floor almost self-contained (no kitchen).
While Hilltop View 4 doesn’t offer much garden space, big potted plants add a natural touch to outside areas, and with open hillside around much of the villa the lack of garden is not felt.
